Cuba Conference Meeting November 11, 2008

Present: Roger Powers, Kate Foster Connors, Jen DiFrancesco, Ken Kovacs, Peter Nord, Liz Johnson, Brett Morgan, Sandy Loseman, Deb Milcarek, Christa Burns Absent: James Parks, John Walter

The question was raised as to an over-riding theme to the conference. It was suggested that communication had been the initial thought. This would be the guide to the Bible Studies each morning. Ken suggested “What does justice mean to us” “Empire as a lens for the New Testament (Accra Confession)” or “Holy Spirit as a builder of community”. It was suggested that members go to the WIKKI to discuss with our Cuban partners and decide on a theme by the December meeting.

The daily conference schedule was printed out from the WIKKI and members reviewed each event for input. The US contribution for music for the conference will be provided by Sandy and Brett. Suggestions were made as to folk/gospel songs, musical theater, Christian rock. Roger provided a list of Spanish hymns.

For USA night, line dancing was suggested as a contribution…perhaps the Electric Slide. Jen & Kate will come up with a few games for us to play. Bingo was mentioned as well as Twister. It was suggested that we may wish to bring a Music Mix for background and dancing. We’d like to bring snacks for USA night which may include Smores, Old Bay Popcorn, Berger Cookies.

Questions for discussion on the WIKKI include: Who will be part of the worship service? (ie will any parts be open to the public) As far as Sunday morning is concerned, how should our participation in outlying worship services look? What will the partnership agreement ceremony look like? (Peter will be in contact with exec. In El Centro)

There was concern for the comfort level of those venturing out to non-English-speaking congregations for several days. All folks will be with a partner and with English/Spanish translators. There needs to be a way that we can be contacted in the event of an emergency back home as well as to maintain contact with the larger group while in outlying congregations. It would be good if we could know our assignments at the December meeting.

Looking forward: John will have translating equipment at the December meeting. All posts need to be complete on the WIKKI by Tuesday morning when Deb will print out and bring to the meeting for group discussion. John will bring information on the optimum flight to and from Miami/Baltimore and we will each make our own reservations. Final payment is due in the Presbytery office on January 15. NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY DEC. 9 AT NOON – BROWN BAG LUNCH
